Beloit, WI -- Louis James Mercer, 86, of Beloit, WI, died Wednesday, November 8, 2017 at Beloit Hospital. He was brought into this world on July 8, 1931, in Spooner, WI, born to parents James Benjamin Mercer and Harriette Loys (Spratford) Mercer. He graduated from Spooner High School in June of 1948. Louis then joined the Army until 1954, and became a Staff Sergeant Tank Mechanic. He spent the next two years in the Navy as a Machinist Mate 2nd Class, then spent 1 year in the Reserves. Louis married Donna Mae Peterson on June 26, 1954, at the Methodist Church in Spooner. After serving, he started his career at Fairbanks Morse while building their home in Beloit, WI. He then worked at Wisconsin Power and Light in various locations. While in Beloit, he served as a volunteer fireman for Turtle Fire Department. He was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church in Beloit. After his retirement from WP&L in 1986, he and Donna traveled and enjoyed several countries. He also in retirement worked part-time at the Shirland School, in Shirland, IL.
He is survived by his three daughters. He is also survived by a very special friend and fiancee; eleven grandchildren; and eighteen great-grandchildren. Louis is predeceased by parents, James and Harriette Mercer; his brothers, Franklyn and George Mercer; and his beloved wife of 40 years, Donna Mae (Peterson) Mercer; and their sons, Arthur Jay Mercer and Douglas Brian Mercer.
Funeral service will be at the Daley Murphy Wisch & Associates Funeral Home and Crematorium, 2355 Cranston Rd. Beloit, WI, with Pastor William Wagner officiating. Interment will be held at a later date with a private family graveside service.
