He was born in Trenton, New Jersey, the eldest son of Joseph S. and Mary Virginia Heald Thorn.

He was head of the Thorn Cracker Company which a certificate of incorporation was issued on June 27, 1896. He held 19 shares of the company at that time. The Thorns had been engaged in the cracker manufacturing business for years on Factory Street. Joseph S. Thorn was the original proprietor.

He was prominent in the Republican party politics, and in 1896 introduced a bill in the Legislature providing for the erection of a high school in the city of Trenton. This Assembly bill, No. 30, was signed by Governor Griggs in March 1896.

He was honored by being named secretary of the State Organization Patriotic Order Society of America.

He resided at 1111 Greenwood Avenue, Trenton and was a member of the Masonic Circle and Order of Eagles, Trenton Aerie, No. 100.
