Edgar "Dale" Kearney, 88, Lawrence, KS, died Monday, March 22, 2010, at Presbyterian Manor in Lawrence, Kan. He was known and loved by his grandsons as "Pop-Pop".
He was born Sept. 1, 1921, in Humansville, Mo. the son of Fred and Maude (Burchett) Kearney. His early life was spent working on the family farm alongside his brothers Granville and Virgil, and sisters Ada & Venita. He had a sister Opal Fern that died in infancy. His mother Maude died when he was 15. He soon moved to Kansas City and began work at the F.W. Woolworth store in North Kansas City. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, he enlisted with the Marine Corps and was sent to the Pacific theater for WW II. He spent 18 months on Midway Island with the 6th Defense Battalion as an operator of an M7 Fire Control Director for the 90mm anti-aircraft guns. He also served on Guam, Saipan and Tinian Islands. After his tour he returned home and married his childhood sweetheart, Helen Crawford, on March 4th, 1944 in HUmansville Mo.
Dale remained in the Marines until his discharge on March 23, 1946 and they lived in Quantico VA, where Helen worked on the base where Dale was stationed. After his USMC service he went back to Woolworth Co. as a manager. He managed stores in Independence Mo, Celeburne TX, Enid OK, Murpysboro and Edwardsville, Ill. In 1956 they moved the family to Memphis TN where he managed the downtown Woolworth Store for 7 years. After 24 years of service with Woolworths, Dale and Helen purchased the Ben Franklin variety store in Lawrence Kansas. Dale and Helen operated this store for over 25 years. They later purchased and operated two Pier One franchise stores in Lawrence & Topeka Kansas during that time until their retirement in 1998.
He was an active member of the First Southern Baptist Church and served many years as a deacon in the church. Other memberships included the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce, the Kiwanis Club, which spanned more than 55+ years and included a term as president. He was also a member of Lawrence American Legion, Dorsey-Liberty Post No. 14.
Survivors include two sons, Jim Kearney and wife Corky, Lawrence, KS., Billy Kearney and wife Denise, Wichita, KS.; two grandsons, Ryan Kearney, Wichita, KS., and Shane Kearney, Lawrence, KS.; two brothers, Virgil Kearney, Bolivar MO., and Kenneth Kearney, Rogers, AR.; and two sisters, Venita Davis, Kansas City, KS., and Ada O'Rear, Lee's Summit MO.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Danny Richard Kearney; one brother, Granville "Ted" Kearney; and a sister, Opal Fern Kearney and his beautiful and loving wife Helen on Feb. 6, 2001.
The family met friends Thursday, March 25, 2010, at Warren-McElwain Mortuary.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Friday, March 26, 2010, at First Southern Baptist Church in Lawrence. Military graveside services with USMC Honor Guard were held at 3:30 p.m. Friday at Humansville Cemetery, Humansville MO.
