Virgil Lee Michels, 79, of Olney, died at 4:55 p.m. Tuesday, July 16, 2002, at his residence.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Summers-Kistler Funeral Home in Olney. Funeral services will be at 10 a m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church in Olney with Reverend Scott Carlson officiating.
Burial with full military rites will be in Haven Hill Cemetery in Olney.

Mr. Michels was born on January 10, 1923, in Passport, the son of Ennis and Cleo (Omsby) Michels.

He married Jolly Marie Gallagher on November 16, 1947. She survives.

He graduated from Noble High School in 1941. He was inducted into the U.S. Army in 1943, where he served in the 88th Infantry in the European Theater. While serving on an outpost in Minterno, Italy, on March 15, 1044, he was struck by a German mortar blast receiving a spinal injury and was awarded the Purple Heart. He worked as office manager for Sullivan Cable TV in Olney for 15 years. He served four terms as Richland County Treasurer retiring from office in December 1994. He served as past president of the Illinois County Treasurers Association. He was a member of Disabled American Veterans, Veteran of Foreign Wars, American Legion and the Elks. He was an active member of First United Methodist Church in Olney and the Methodist Men.

Mr. Michels is survived by his wife of 54 years, Jolly Michels, of Olney; a daughter, Michele Dallmier and her husband, George, of Teutopolis; a son, Mark Michels and his wife, Amy, of Evansville, Ind.; a brother, Doris Dean Michels and his wife, Delores, of Olney; several nieces and nephews; three grandchildren, Noah Williams, Leah Dallmier and Hannah Dallmier; and two sisters-in-law, Leone Michels, of Olney, and Norma Michels, of Grayville.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Thelma (Michels) Leach, of Olney, and two brothers, Herschel Michels, of Grayville, and Robert Michels, of Mt. Gilead.

Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church or Hospice of Southeastern Illinois.
