In November 1825, he married Amanda Grover, d/o John Grover, in Machias, Cattaraugus Co NY. By 1834 he owned 138 acres of land in Machias and improved 8 acres of that.
In the summer of 1835, Eli and his family, together with the Albert Fancher family, moved by covered wagon over the Overland Trail to Harrison Township, Winnebago County, Illinois, stopping two or three weeks in Terre Coupee Prairie, a stage coach station in St. Joseph Co Indiana. There were only 81 people living in Winnebago Co by the fall of 1835.
Eli secured a tract of government land along the Pecatonica River where he continued to live until 1890 when he and his wife moved to Rockford to live with their son, Joel, who was sheriff of Winnebago County. Eli's wife Amanda died October 14, 1840 of a fever prevalent in an early day and her obituary appeared in the 3rd issue of the Rockford Star.
Eli married a 2nd time July 18, 1841 to a widow, Mrs. Ann Maria (Smith) Woodle of Monroe, Wisconsin. Eli died April 18, 1891 at the city jail where his son Joel was sheriff.
His death certificate states that he died in the city jail without stating that he was living with Joel who had an apartment there. The obituary in the Rockford Star speaks of "Grandpa Burbank", but never mentions his first name.
