MUSCATINE, Iowa - Edward Wallace Ware, 67, of Muscatine, died suddenly Wednesday, August 16, 2006.

Funeral Service will be 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 19, 2006, at the Ralph J. Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home. Reverend Amy Johnson of the Spangler Chapel will officiate the service. Honorary casket bearers will be Lewis Terrill, Homer Snyder, Carl Albers, Mike Fridley, Joe Manjoine, Larry Terrill, Duane Timmons, Jim Barkema, and John Baker. Casket bearers will be Ron Oostendorp, John Robinson, Bob Sharar, Jim Harder, Larry Lemkau, and Marty Radtke. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday, August 18, 2006, at the Ralph J. Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Fellowship United Methodist Church, American Heart Association, American Diabetes Association or the Edward Ware Scholarship Fund at Muscatine High School.

Ed was born on January 23, 1939, in Muscatine, the son of James and Melva Faulhaber Ware. He married Deanna D. Azeltine on December 23, 1962, in Rowan, Iowa.

He graduated from the University of Northern Iowa in 1962, and received his Master's Degree from Northeast Missouri State University in 1971.

He taught for 36 years, the last 30 years with the Muscatine School System, retiring as a math teacher from West Middle School in 1997.

Ed served on the Muscatine High School Hall of Honor Committee. He was inducted into Muscatine High School Hall of Honor in 1998.

He grew-up on the river where he loved to fish, he also enjoyed hunting, and camping with his family and friends. Ed loved sharing his knowledge of wildlife with his grandchildren and students.

He was a member of the Spangler Chapel, the Retired National Education Association and the Iowa Education Association.

Survivors include his wife, Deanna Ware of Muscatine; two daughters, Susan M. Terrill and husband, Matt, of Galesburg, Illinois, and Andrea K. Albers and husband, Tim, of Carmel, Indiana; four grandchildren, Maggie R. Terrill, Elizabeth M. Terrill, Andrew E. Albers, and Emily J. Albers; one brother, Richard J. Ware and wife, Betty, of LaGrange Park, Illinois; and one sister, Judy Evans of LaGrange Park, Illinois.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

'A super guy:' Ed Ware missing in river after boating mishap

FAIRPORT, Iowa -- Family and friends of Ed Ware waited on the shores of the Mississippi River Wednesday afternoon as rescue teams continued to search for him.

According to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, a man was reported missing after falling overboard from his boat at 11:30 a.m., across from Fairport State Park. Although the man's identity was not confirmed by investigating officials as of press time this morning, family members said it was Ed Ware, 67, a former Muscatine High School teacher, coach and celebrated student-athlete.

The search for Ware was halted at nightfall Wednesday and was to resume this morning, according to the Muscatine County Sheriff's Office.

Family members said Ware and his wife were teaching two grandchildren to water ski when someone's hat went overboard. Ware reached for it, the boat tipped, and Ware fell over the side. He was not wearing a flotation device.

Marty Terrill, 43, Muscatine, said he was the brother of Ware's son-in-law. Waiting on the banks of the Mississippi, he described Ware as a "fabulous athlete" and an enthusiastic outdoorsman.

"All he did was hunt and fish," Terrill said.

Although high school officials could not be reached for confirmation, relatives in Muscatine said Ware still held a record for most letters earned while at Muscatine High School, lettering in at least five sports. Ware later went on to Muscatine Community College and the University of Northern Iowa, where he played college baseball.

Kyle Reifert, 53, of Muscatine said Ware coached him as a member of the Muscatine High School basketball team in 1971. The two remained in touch. Reifert was hoping Ware would attend his next class reunion.

"I just talked to him on the phone a few days ago," Reifert said, watching the water and standing a few feet from Terrill. "He was a super guy, always joking about something, laughing. He didn't ever seem to age either."

Responders included the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, Illinois Department of Natural Resources, Muscatine County Sheriff's Department, Muscatine Fire Department, Rock Island County Sheriff's Department, Muscatine County Search and Rescue, and the Colona, Ill., Fire Protection District.
