David Burgess Wardlaw, Sr., 76, of Newberry, died Thursday, June 2, 2011, at Providence Hospital.

Born on October 16, 1934, in McCormick, he was a son of the late David Morrah and Florence Burgess Wardlaw. He was a member of Epting Memorial United Methodist Church. Mr. Wardlaw served in the S.C. National Guard and retired in 1988 from the South Carolina Highway Patrol with over 30 years of service. He became a SC State Constable in 1988 a position he held until the present. He also served as a bailiff for Newberry County for four years. In 1985 he was named DMV Employee of the Year for the entire state.

Mr. Wardlaw was a member of the Newberry County Law Enforcement Officers Association, the S.C. Troopers Association, the American Association of State Troopers, the Fraternal Order of Police, and the S.C. Law Enforcement Officers Association. He was also a member of the Newberry College Athletic Club and the Edgefield District Historical Society.

He is survived by his wife, Georgia Frick Wardlaw; a son, David Burgess Wardlaw, Jr.; step-daughter, Melody S. Brazell of Newberry; step-son, Steve N. Shealy of Newberry; sisters, Betty W. Belk of Taylors and Florence W. Buie of Spartanburg; a granddaughter, Erin Taylor Wardlaw of Laurens; step-grandchildren, Matt Amerson, Blake Amerson, Lauren Shealy and Rynn Shealy Rogers; step-great grandchildren, William Rogers and Harper Crosier.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, June 4, 2011, at McSwain-Evans Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. David Inman, Rev. Barry Brown, Rev. Franklin Buie. Entombment will follow in Newberry Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to Epting Memorial United Methodist Church, 1401 Milligan Street, Newberry, SC 29108.

Active pallbearers: Craig Newton, Jerry Wright, Robert Lake III, Buck Cockrell, Jackie Swindler and David Bowers.

Honorary pallbearers: Thurmond Burnett, David Burnett, Alan Gardner, Corey Brazell, Tookie Oates and all active and retired law enforcement officers
