William J. Henderson was born in New York. He moved to Michigan with his family about 1840. He married Maria A. Cummings in Niles, MI on 2 Mar 1857. They had three children: Addie, Emily, and Walter. Walter died in infancy.

William enlisted as private in Company K of the 25th Michigan Infantry on 21 Aug 1862 in Buchanan, MI. He was mustered in on 22 Sep 1862. He was promoted to Corporal in February 1863. He became ill in the summer of 1863 and died of "lung fever" (pneumonia) on 11 Sep 1863 in Louisville, KY. According to his granddaughter, his wife Maria went to KY to take care of him. After he died, a soldier was assigned to accompany her and William's body back to Niles.
