Byron served in the Civil War with the Iowa 3rd Infantry (Company K) for the full 3-year term. They fought in such major battles as Shiloh and Vicksburg, and a number of smaller ones. He was wounded in the side on Oct 5, 1862 in the Battle of Hatchie Bridge, TN (source Cedar Falls Gazette, 17 Oct 62), but apparently not seriously enough for it to be listed in his record.

Roster record: Taylor, Byron E. Age 24. Residence Cedar Falls. Enlisted May 21, 1861. Mustered June 8, 1861. Mustered out July 18, 1864, Davenport, Iowa expiration of term of service.
