Verne Terry (1922 - 2011)

Verne Terry, 89, died Monday, May 16, 2011, at her home in Richardson, located not far from her granddaughter who had been her caregiver for the last 12 years. Graveside service: 2 p.m. Thursday in Rose Hill Cemetery in Merkel with the Rev. Todd Keller officiating, directed by Starbuck Funeral Home of Merkel.

Verne was born April 9, 1922, in Merkel to Ira and Etna (Cox) Moore. She married Aubrey C. Terry Jr. on Sept. 23, 1939, in Merkel. Verne graduated from Merkel High School and was a member of First Baptist Church. A.C. and Verne were longtime residents of Fort Worth. She was very active in the community and loved to entertain with many social and family gatherings. Verne was a grocery store clerk for many years with A&P and retired with the United Food Services. Verne loved to go back to Merkel for the big events like homecoming to see old friends and family. She was a champion of a wife, always making sure A.C. was where he was supposed to be. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Verne will be remembered as a very generous, fun-loving, joyful, faithful woman for whom family was most important. She was preceded in death by her husband on April 12, 2010. Also preceding her in death was her only daughter, Jan Chitwood who passed away 12 years previously on the same day, May 16, 1999.

Survivors: Granddaughter, Terri Murray and husband, Len, of Plano; grandson, Glenn Patterson of Lake Worth, Fla.; great-grandchildren, Kaylyn, Kendall and Matthew Murray, Justin and Trent Patterson; and brother, Boyd Moore of Fredericksburg.
