William S. Denison came to Muskingum County with his parents and siblings in the year 1810. Raised in a family of eight children, four sons and four daughters, William was the youngest son in the family. This Denison family was originally from Stonington, Connecticut.
He attended Ohio University and through hard work and industry became an early scientific farmer, and over the years from the original Denison farm accumulated nearly 1,500 acres of farmland.
In 1853 he pledged a $10,000 gift to the Baptist Granville College, and in 1856 the trustees in gratitude changed the name to Denison University.
He married Mary O. Fisher 31 May 1860 and had three children. He was a longstanding member of the Salem Baptist Church in Adamsville.
