Ennis is an old d time livery stable man. Back around the turn of the century he had a livery stable on North Park Street which was just around the corner of the old Beach House. He sold out in 1912 and bought a stable in Mattoon.
Later he moved to Atwood.
When Ennis sold out his livery stable here in 1912, there were two other stables. Charlie Smith had on the south side of the Railroad tracks with 30 horses. R.E. Milligan had one where the Warren garage is now and kept 12 horses. Ennis had a stable of 18 to 20 horses. At that time automobiles were just beginning to appear on the roads and the Douglas County garage was being built.
The rates for hiring a rig varied. If you wanted a horse and buggy for an hour it would cost $1, If you wanted a rig for the day, that would cost $3, . Special drives from Tuscola to Garrett was $2, Atwood and Villa Grove was $3. No one likes horses more than Ennis, but he does't care much for shows. He keeps a team now and farms for thier feed and does chores around for farmers that no longer have horses.
Ennis is 71 now and and he's had to be a cheif cook and bottle washer lately because Mrs Coslet is in the hospital. She has been rather badly for some time now and last February she fell and broke her arm.
