Annie was born from the union of Rev. Samuel and Jesse Thompkins Gathright. Both parents preceded her in rest. Annie was born on June 7, 1927 in the town of Shaqualak, Miss.
She was baptized into Christ at Running Water Baptist Church in Shaqualak, Miss. After moving to Gulfport, in 1965, Mrs. Payton Joined Ebenezer Baptist Church where she was a faithful member and later became the chairman over the kitchen department, and also served on the mission board.
She was well known by her neighbors and family for her knack in growing flowers, sewing and cooking. Her yard was always seen with a rich display of colorful flowers. She had sewed choir robes, ministry robes, prom dresses, wedding gowns and dress suits. She was commonly known by two names; Ms. Anne (pronounced Misanne) by friends and neighbors, and by the name of Anne Laura (pronounced AnneLar) by family.
She is preceded in death by seven sisters, Naomi, Tensie, Dora, Matilda, Mary, Mattie and Lilly Mae; four brothers, Ezell, Dave, Abe and Henry.
She married Willie Chamberlain in March of 1943, and from that union, six children were born: Three daughters, Shirley Mae Kidd of Providence, R.I., Willie Mae Cousan of Gulfport and Maggie Delores Chamberlain of Providence, R.I.; three sons, McArthur Chamberlain, Edward Earl Chamberlain and Willie Eugene Chamberlain, all of Gulfport.
She later re-married to Johnny Frank Payton and from that union four children were born. Three daughters, Patricia Ann Kidd of Providence, R.I., Peggy Sue (Melvin) Adams of Augusta, Ga. and Terry Ann Lee of Tucson, Ariz.; and one son, Johnny Jerome (Miranda) Payton of College Park, Ga.; five sisters, Rachel Wilson of Gulfport, Willie Lee Malone of San Diego, Calif., Aretha Garrie of Detroit, Mich., Aneal Hale of York, Ala., Martha Freeman of San Francisco, Calif.; three brothers, Sam Thompkins of Gulfport, Solomon Thompkins of Chicago, Ill., Jacob Thompkins of Dayton, OH. She also had 16 grandchildren and a host of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
A wake will be Friday, April 16, 2004, from 6-8 p.m., at the House of Richmond Funeral Home Chapel. Saturday, April 17, 2004, there will be a visitation from 11 a.m.-noon, at Ebenezer Baptist Church following with a service at noon, with a burial at Evergreen Cemetery. House of Richmond in Gulfport is in charge of the arrangements.
