Son of Orville Cleaver and Grace Cowgill Cleaver.

Clifton, who resided in Christiana, Delaware, served as a Technical Sergeant & Engineer/Top Turret Gunner on B-17G (#42-31751), 549th Bomber Squadron, 385th Bomber Group, 8th Army Air Corp, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He enlisted in the Army on September 23, 1942 in Camden, New Jersey. He was noted as being employed as a Stock Clerk and as being Single, without dependents.

Clifton was "Killed In Action" when his B-17 was hit by enemy flak and crashed near Boulougne, France during the war.

He had served for one year and four months at the time of his death and was awarded a Purple Heart.
