Obituary for John Freeman Hart Sr.
Freeman Hart Dies Suddenly at Hospital
J. Freeman Hart, president of Hart's Mortuary here, died unexpectedly late last night in a local hospital.
A native of Montpelier Springs in Monroe County, Mr. Hart moved to Macon in 1885 and attended local schools.
He joined his brother as an apprentice with Hart & Brannan, Funeral Directors, and in 1908 bought a third of the interest with his brother, Jesse B. Hart. Mr. Hart bought the entire business in 1914 when his brother went into the banking business exclusively.
Mr. Hart was one of the first arterial embalmers in the state. He graduated from the Barnes School of Anatomy in New York in 1906, the Southern School of Embalming at Augusta in 1907, and took a post graduate course at the Tennessee School of Embalming in 1908.
Mr. Hart was elected to the National Selected Morticians in 1926 and served as chairman of the NSM for the Southeast in 1927. In 1930, he built one of the finest funeral homes in the South, adding a modern cremation plant, the first south of Cincinnati.
In the fall of 1941, Mr. Hart purchased the old Macon Savings Bank Building which now bears his name, and a few months later joined his brother Jesse in the organization of the Hart Loan and Trust Co., of which he was made president.
Mr. Hart was a charter member and first treasurer of the Macon Rotary Club. He also was the first treasurer of the Boy Scouts when that group was formed here. At the same time, he also was treasurer of the Salvation Army and the Franklin Lodge of Odd Fellows.
In 1914 Mr. Hart was elected a director in the YMCA and the Macon National Bank - now the First National Bank - both of which served continuously for 43 years.
He was a director of the Southern Life Insurance Co., and the Southern Securities Corporation.
Mr. Hart was the son of the late John Waller Hart and Frances Elizabeth Hawthorne Hart.
He is survived by his wife, Elsie Gibson Hart; a son, J. Freeman Hart Jr. of Macon; a sister, Mrs. Cora Koons of Macon; and four grandchildren.
Hart's Mortuary will announce funeral arrangements.
