Harry was the second of William Lightner & Maria Louisa (Peters) Bird's eight children. His siblings were: Annis, Mary, Lula, George, Susie, Vivian, & Opal.

He served in the Spanish War & later chose a career working on the railroad.

Harry married Grace May (Smith) Cooper on March 18, 1929. They had been married 14 years when he died from a Cerebral Hemorrhage on December 13, 1943.

He is buried in an unmarked grave.
