Mary was born in Dungarvan, Waterford, Ireland, the daughter of Michael Kennedy and Margaret Quinn. She came to New York City in the 1880s with her sisters, Alice Kennedy and Margaret Kennedy Lynch. She married Francis Veale (Vail) at St. Cecelia's Church. They had 10 children, six of whom survived to adulthood.
