Nelson was a loving husband, father and grandfather who is survived by his wife Bobbi R. Burton; six children, Angelique Nichols, Bill Burton, Monique Burton Hendricks, Mike Burton, Danny Burton, Jim Burton; 13 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild.
He was a highly decorated war veteran including, the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star for Valor, having served in both Korea and Vietnam. He served 24 years in the Army and retired as a Lt. Colonel in 1976.
He was known by many as "Mr. Wizard" as he built the first skateboard park in Wilmington in the late 1970's. He went on to build Wizard Skateparks in Dunn, Fayetteville, Raleigh, Florence, SC, Manchester, NH and Dallas, TX.
Having grown up in Wilmington, he loved the ocean and he loved to dance. He was a lifeguard at Wrightsville Beach, Carolina Beach and Myrtle Beach. He was also one of the first inductees into the Shagger's Hall of Fame with a permanent "Star" on the Walk of Fame in North Myrtle Beach.
A memorial service will be held at Inlet Watch Yacht Club at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday May 16, 2004. In lieu of flowers, please contribute to Lower Cape Fear Hospice & LifeCareCenter in memory of Nelson L. Burton.
