He was captured at Rappahannock Station, Virginia on November 7, 1863 and was confined at Old Capital Prison, Washington, D.C. until he was transferred to Johnson's Island, Ohio on November 11, 1863. He was released from Johnson's Island on June 12, 1865 after taking the oath.
