William resided in Orange County, North Carolina where he enlisted in Company C, 6th Regiment North Carolina State Troops at the age of 20 on May 1, 1861. He was mustered in as Corporal and promoted to Sergeant on April 1, 1862. He was elected 2nd Lieutenant to rank from July 15, 1862 and was promoted to 1st Lieutenant to rank from September 17, 1862. He was wounded in the arm at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania on July 1, 1863. He was captured at Rappahannock Station, Virginia on November 7, 1863 and was confined at Old Capital Prison, Washington, D.C. until he was transferred to Johnson's Island, Ohio on November 11, 1863. He was released from Johnson's Island on June 12, 1865 after taking the oath.
