Daughter of John Riley Cook and Mahala Josephine Hawdersheldt; wife of Harley Boston Hinkle; mother of Florence, Ernest Lee "John," Lucy Mae, Zettie Ruth, Mamie, Erma Frances; grandmother of Franklin William Lee Shumaker; great-grandmother of Troi Shumaker.

I knew my great-grandmother when I was a child, but unfortunately do not have any of those memories. I did not grow up around her, but did get to see her again when I was a teenager in 1977. We went to visit her during that summer at the Hinkle's Old Homeplace in Loudoun County, before we moved to Florida. She was about 86 yrs old, and I remember that when we got there she was in the garden, with her long hair in braids, tending her grapes. I was amazed that she was so spry for her age, and how strong she appeared to be. She was living on her own, as my great-grandfather had passed in 1974, and I was struck by her liveliness! I will forever remember her as a strong and capable woman; I just wish I'd been able to know her better and spend more time with her.
I still have a letter from her that she sent to my mother when I was a baby; it is a treasured item.
