He was a son of Grover Thurman and Melvina Mariah (Dulaney) Ray. On Jun 12, 1946, he married Loretta Grewe, who is deceased.

Surviving are a son, Mahlon (Monica), Columbus; three daughters, Maretta (Michael) Kalinich, Corning, NY, Rachael Henderson, Celina, and Jana (Doug) Reed, Jackson; a brother, Garvin Duane, Spokane Valley, WA; a sister, Bonnie Marie Ray, Belleview, FL; a sister-in-law, Phyllis Grewe, Versailles; fourteen grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

Deceased are two brothers, Thurman Leslie and Earl Arthur.

He was a 1942 graduate of Hollansburg-Westmont High School and served in the Army Air Force. He retired from farming in 1976 and retired in 1986 from Fram Corp in Greenville after 20 years of service. He was a member of American Legion Buckeye Post 174, North Star, and the Pampa Army-Air Field Reunion Association.

Services are at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, near North Star, the Rev. Laura Shreffler officiating.
