David King Cherry is the son of Wright Cherry, Sr and Malinda Gillam of Bertie County, NC. His father served with the 14th US Colored Heavy Artillery during the civil war.
David was well educated and earned the title of professor and served as a college dean following his service in WWI. He married Irene L Chesnutt of NC and they are the parents of Marie Cherry, born in 1929, while her father taught at Kittrell College in Vance county, NC.
