United States Navy Officer. He had a forty seven year career in the United States Navy. In 1809 he was commission as a Midshipman at the age of 14. During the War of 1812 he was promoted to Lieutenant, and in December 1814 he was in command of a gunboat in Lake Borgne, Louisiana. On December 14 a British naval expedition attacked and defeated the American fighting ships in the lake, although the United States forces inflicted damage to the British and delayed a planned amphibious landing to take New Orelans. Lieutenant McKeever’s gunboat was the last to surrender, and he was severely wounded in the engagement. He would go onto be promoted to Commander in 1830 and Captain in 1838. In 1846 he was assigned to command the Brooklyn Naval Yard in New York City, New York, a post he held from October 1, 1846 to October 1, 1849. In 1851 he was assigned as Flag Officer and commander of the United States Navy’s Brazilian Squadron, and held the duty until 1855, when he was assigned as commander of the Gosport Navy Yard in Norfolk, Virginia. In 1856 the cities of Norfolk and Portsmouth suffered a terrible outbreak of yellow fever that killed many residents. Commodore McKeever was give then option to suspend naval operations until the epidemic passed. However, he chose to remain on duty, and succumbed himself to the pestilence in April of that year. His son, Chauncey McKeever, would go on to serve in the Union Army during the Civil War, and be brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers.
