Aldo John "Coach" Forte, 89, died Aug. 29, 2007, at his home.
He was born in Chicago and lived in Palm City, coming from Port St. Lucie, where he lived for 20 years, and before that, Detroit.
He received his bachelor of arts degree from the University of Montana where he played on the Grizzlies football team.
As a professional football player and coach, he either played or coached on four championship teams. He played with the Chicago Bears from 1939 until 1942 and was a guard on the 1940 championship team. He was a guard with the Detroit Lions during the 1946 season and was a guard during the 1947 season with the Green Bay Packers. He returned to the Detroit Lions in 1950 as an assistant coach and retired from the team in 1965. During this time, Detroit won three championship games, back to back in 1952 and 1953 and finally in 1957.
He was in the Navy in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He was awarded the Asiatic Pacific medal with two stars, the Philippine Liberation medal with two stars, the American Theater Ribbon and the World War II Victory Medal.
He was the founder and former owner of AJF Inc., a steel mill supply company in Michigan.
Survivors include two sons, Gary Forte of Northfield, Mich., and Greg Forte of Orlando; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Sammi, in 1974; and his second wife, Dorothy, in 2001.
SERVICES: Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Sept. 4 at Yates Funeral Home, Port St. Lucie. A funeral service will follow at 7 p.m.
