Thomas was the 4th child of Charlie and sally Neeson. Born in Belfast, N. Ireland. In those days he would have been described as not "thriving" and developed bouts of vomiting and diarrhea. He was not doing very well and was hospitalized.
My father was very angry that God might take another of his children. He had been so heartbroken after the death of their first child Margaret Lillian. He argued with God that he wasn't getting his son. On September 4 1953 he headed off to a union meeting for work. My mum and Aunt Jean went to the Royal Victoria Childrens Hospital to visit the baby.
As they approached the ward where Thomas was the doctors were rushing in. The nurse asked my mum to wait outside. The baby started to cry and my mother commented to my aunt that it was Thomas and he sounded much stronger...it was a good sign. A few minutes later the doctor came to tell my mother that Thomas had passed away. He said it had happened a few minutes before my mum arrived. All her life she maintained that it was Thomas who cried. There had been no other infants in the ward. It was his goodbye to her.
While at the union meeting my dad had a feeling come over him and he left finding himself ending up in the chapel and praying. He told God that if he wanted Thomas to take him and stop the babies suffering, after praying he headed to the hospital where he found my mum and aunt.
What transpired in the church that night was miraculous. My father would later say he felt his anger at God for taking his daughter drain from him and that he was able to surrender to what ever God wanted for Thomas.
My parents discovered that while my dad was praying my brother had died. My father believed that God had let Thomas live until my dad was ready to let go and healed him from the grief of losing Margaret Lillian. My parents would have sixteen children, Margaret, Thomas, a still birth, two miscarriages and 11 of us who still survive.
My mother used to sit and share her memories of her two angels with me and I feel as if I always knew them and like her I have never forgotten them.
When I was born, I was called after my mum's best friend who had died at age 40. I also was very ill as an infant and was not expected to survive. My mother said she would never call another child after anyone who was dead. My sister was after my fathers mother and my brother after my mum's dad.
