She was born on February 21, 1927, at Soudan, Minnesota; the daughter of Karl and Helen (Holmes) Bierwirth. She grew up in Soudan, where she graduated from high school and was crowned First Snow Queen of Soudan during her senior year.

She met Alarik Bakk after he returned home from overseas from serving in World War II., and they were married on November 5, 1947, in Soudan. After marriage, the couple settled in Cook where they were longtime residents. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Cook. She was a tireless, longtime, much awarded volunteer for the following: North East Office of Ombudsman-advocate for nursing home patients; Lutheran Social Services-Volunteer Guardian; St. Louis County Social Service – volunteer driver, and Arrowhead RSVP Program. She organized a diabetic support group in Cook in 1983. Later the group changed to address other health problems, with Willie arranging for monthly speakers for the group. She and Alarik started a Medical Equipment Loan Closet in 1993, which is part of the Cook Area Health and Wellness, an important service to the community. In 1995, she and Alarik received the Northland Volunteer Council's Hall of Fame-Individual Award for their many years of volunteer services. In 1997, the city of Cook named November 5th Willie and Alarik Bakk Day in their honor. She was undaunted in raising monies and writing for grants to agencies like the Northland Foundation to get the help needed to undertake the building of an outdoor gazebo at the Cook Nursing Home. The completion of this has provided independence, privacy, and a place for residents to resume a part of their lives that may have been foregone since leaving their own homes. After a incapacitating stroke in 1997, she has resided in several long term care facilities. Even while she was confined to long term care and retiring in 2004, Willie still gave of herself by volunteering in numerous long term care facilities as President of the Resident Councils and provided Tele-Care Services under the Elder Services Network. Her family wishes to thank the many health care providers for their day to day care of Willie.

She is preceded in death by an infant daughter, Darling Joy Bakk on September 16, 1956,; a brother, Don Bierwirth in 2000; two sisters, Mary Page in 1991 and Emma Johnson in 1999, and a son-in-law, Richard Stusse in 2003.

Funeral arrangements are with the Mlaker Funeral Home in Cook.
