Nathaniel Bissell, s. of John Bissell and his unnamed 1st wife, last child of his parents and only child known to have been b. at Windsor, Conn. He was b. of record Sept. 24 (bapt. Sept. 27), 1640 and d. testate at Windsor Mar. 12, 1713/4 (g.s., Æ 74).

Nathaniel is interred at the Town of South Windsor, but d. of record at the Town of Windsor. South Windsor was incorporated from the Town of East Windsor in 1845, and East Windsor, the portion of ancient Windsor east of the Conn. River, was incorporated from the Town of Windsor in 1768.

Nathaniel had three wives. He m. 1) of record Sept. 25, 1662 at Windsor, Conn., Mindwell Moore, dau. of Dea. John and Abigail Moore, and sister of his brother Thomas Bissell's wife Abigail. She was b. of record July 10, 1643 at Windsor where she d. Nov. 24, 1682. Nine children of the family.

On July 4, 1683 of record at Windsor, Nathaniel m. 2) Dorothy Fitch, dau. of Rev. James Fitch of Saybrook (and later Norwich), Conn. by his 1st wife Abigail Whitfield, b. at Saybrook Apr. 1658 (day missing in the Saybrook record). It is very likely that the marriage actually took place at Norwich, where her father was then pastor of the Norwich Congregational Church. She d. at Windsor June 28, 1691. Two known children recorded at Windsor: an infant son b. Aug. 5, 1685 who d. 9 days later, and Dorothy, b. Dec. 27, 1686. Proof of the family relation is contained in Rev. James Fitch's Feb. 7, 1695/6 will at Norwich, Conn.: "I have also given to my son Nathaniel Bissell ye husband of my daughter Dorothy, one of my allotments at Windham..." [New London Prob. Dist., Case 2013.]

On an unknown date after June 1691, Nathaniel m. 3) Deliverance Haines (q.v. Haynes), formerly the wife of 1) John Rockwell of Windsor (d. Sept. 3, 1673) and 2) John Warner of Middletown, Conn. (d. Apr. 10, 1690.) She d. intestate June 12, 1718 at Middletown with her estate inventory taken there Oct. 6, 1718. Her original inventory document is titled "of the estate of Mrs. Deliverance Bissell widow of Mr. Nathaniel Bissell of Windsor deceased," Manwaring in his Hartford Probate District digest failing to include the words "of Windsor deceased" in Deliverance's inventory record. There were no children of this marriage. Deliverance had seven children by her first two husbands and her estate was administered by her son Capt. Joseph Rockwell of Middletown [Hartford Prob. Dist., 9:303.] Deliverance's 1st husband was the maternal grandson of the writer's ancestors. The 2nd husband of Deliverance (Haines) Rockwell's 1st mother-in-law, Susanna Capen, was Matthew Grant, Sr. of Windsor, Conn., latter the writer's ancestor. These family relations undoubtedly played a part in Nathaniel Bissell's selection of a third wife.

A summary of the known children of Nathaniel Bissell will be added later.
