US Congressman. He served in the United States House of Representatives from 1933 until his death, as a representative of Oregon's 1st Congressional District. A graduate of Columbia University and the Willamette University School of Law, he served in the United States Navy as a seaman during the First World War. Prior to being elected to Congress, he was a member of the Oregon State Legislature from 1922 to 1928, and from 1930 to 1932. He also served as city attorney for Astoria, Oregon and as a newspaper reporter in New York City, San Francisco and Astoria, Oregon. He died at the Bethesda Naval Hospital on his 62nd birthday.
