Thomas Edmund "Ed" Schmeltzer

Newark - A Memorial Mass for Thomas Edmund "Ed" Schmeltzer, age 95, of Newark, will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 6, at the Church of the Blessed Sacrament, 378 East Main Street, Newark with Father Jonathan F. Wilson as celebrant.

Mr. Schmeltzer died on Wednesday, October 3, 2018 at Arlington Care Center. He was born September 11, 1923 in Logan, Ohio to the late Alphonsus Liguri and Mary Alice (Gordon) Schmeltzer.

Mr. Schmeltzer graduated from Holy Trinity High School in Somerset and married his wife of nearly 65 years, the late Betty Baughman at Holy Trinity Church. Moving to Zanesville they were members of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church and then they settled in Newark and became parishioners of the Church of the Blessed Sacrament. He served with the United States Navy during World War II, where he learned the refrigeration trade that lead him to more opportunities in the plumbing and electrical industries during his civilian life. He was a member of the Plumber & Pipefitters Union.

Mr. Schmeltzer was especially known for his craftsmanship in woodworking, punch tin and the making and distribution of the Holy Rosary.

He is survived by his children and their spouses, Cecilia Schmeltzer of Zanesville, Wendy and Doug Stang of Indianapolis, Allen Schmeltzer of Texas, Alice and Bill Buskirk of Howard, Toni and George Coffran of Pekin, Illinois, and James Schmeltzer of Chicago; seven grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and many loving friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Betty M. Schmeltzer; and three children, Patricia, David and Paul.

Mr. Schmeltzer gave his body to The Ohio State University for medical research. Inurnment will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery at a later date.

Family and friends may gather from 10:30-11:30 a.m. prior to the Mass in the vestibule of the Church.

The family would like to welcome friends to a meal at Shephard Hall following the Mass.
