Norman Paul Stark USNR (Ret) age 89, passed away on Tuesday, March 23, 2010 in Murray, Utah.
He was born September 22, 1920 in Evanston, WY, the son of Bessie B. and Norman M. Stark. Norm was an only child.
Norm served as a World War II F6F Navy fighter pilot during 1944 and 1945 in the Pacific on the USS Essex, Wasp, and Yorktown earning a Distinguished Flying Cross & Permanent Citation for meritorious conduct as a member of the Naval Service.
Upon returning home he graduated Phi Betta Kappa from the University of Colorado and certified as a Russian interpreter and translator by the Department of the Navy. He was shot down off Okinawa and was picked up a few hours later by a sea plane. While in his life raft, off shore, the Japanese took an occasional shot at him, but Norm told his family that they were under a heavy air attack.
As a geologist, Norm was employed by Standard Oil of Ohio and the U.S. Forest Service. The study of archeology became Norm's focus after retirement including travels to a dig in Petra, Jordan.
Norm is survived by his daughter Sanford Alexandra Stark and cousins Bob and Jan Savage, and Lynda Turner and family.
A visitation will be held at Crandall Funeral Home in Evanston, WY on Monday, March 29, 2010 from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the services. Funeral Services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, March 29, 2010 at Crandall Funeral Home in Evanston, WY.
Military graveside services will follow in the Evanston Cemetery.
