Theon Nielson (1905 - 2010)
On March 22, 2010, with his son by his side, Theon S. Nielsen passed from this life to be met by his eternal companion and his son, as well as many other members of his family. Theon was born Feb. 9, 1905, in Hyde Park, Utah, to Thomas and Lettie Peterson Nielsen. He had four brothers: Floyd (Libby); Clayton (Elizabeth); Rudger (Drew); and Vincent (Lilly), all deceased. He had five sisters: Venice, deceased as a youth; Vivetta (Sam Merrill); Zelpha (Jack Reed); Teresa; and his only living sister, Lorna (Peter Rasmussen).
Theon attended Cache County schools, graduating from North Cache High School, and then went on to Utah State Agricultural College (USU).
He met Cleah Choate at a Sugar Ball, a dance held after the harvest campaign; they dated for a short time and then married in the Logan LDS Temple on March 28, 1928. To this union, three children were born: Lyman R. (Phyllis), deceased, of Albuquerque, N.M.; Duveen (Ronald Gunter) of Kemmerer, Wyo.; and Dale (Marilyn) of Smithfield, Utah; eight grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren and still adding to his great-great-grandchildren count.
Theon was a master mechanic/electrician, working for Amalgamated Sugar Company in Lewiston; he retired in 1970. During that time, he did not miss one single day's work because of illness. He was a devoted and trustworthy employee of the sugar company. He made many friends and acquaintances there, but as expected, he has outlived them all.
Theon was a fixer-up type of guy who could and did help everyone in need for whatever the need would be. He loved to be of service to his neighbors and friends.
As a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, his love for his Savior was exemplified in everything that he did. He had a strong testimony and it showed. He served his Heavenly Father by the many callings he had in the church: a Scoutmaster, a Young Men's leader, a High Priest group leader, a Sunday School teacher, counselor in a bishopric, bishop and patriarch; and a temple officiator for 12 years, as well as a home-teacher for 89 years. He also served his community as recorder/treasurer, and the first building inspector in Lewiston; all of these he did with a smile.
Theon is survived by his two living children: eight grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and many great-great-grandchildren; a sister also survives him. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, a son, a son-in-law and a granddaughter-in-law.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 27, 2010, in the Lewiston Second Ward Chapel, 10 S. 1600 West, Lewiston, Utah. A viewing will be held at the church from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. prior to services. Interment will be in the Lewiston City Cemetery. Condolences may be extended to the family online at www.nelsonfuneralhome.com.
If you would rather make a donation, Theon's favorite charities were The Missionary Fund and the Perpetual Education Fund of the LDS Church. Special thanks are give to the care givers at Logan Regional Hospital, Logan Nursing and Rehabilitation, and Alpine Hospice for their care given to him during his short illness. A very special thank-you to Minnie and Kimber Hall and their family
