Agnes Akridge Ryan, Pelham's First Citizen of the Year in 1959, died Saturday, 21 Aug 1993, at her home in Pelham, Ga. She was 91. Funeral services were held Monday, 23 Aug, at 11:00 AM at the Braswell Funeral Home Chapel. Dr. Hal Hunter officiated. Burial was in the Pinecrest Memory Gardens.
She was a "one person beautification committee for the whole town," Miriam Powell said. Mrs. Powell is chairman of the Pelham Arts and Heritage Council. Mrs. Ryan developed several parks in Pelham, trimmed shrubbery and trees, and planted flowers along roadsides and public places throughout Pelham, Mrs. Powell said. In addition, she was a certified flower show judge, and oversaw or made floats for parades in Thomasville and Albany for 25 or 30 years. "She always saw that Pelham was represented," Mrs. Powell said. "She was dedicated to the city and worked for no pay." "She did a lot to improve the looks of Pelham," Lilah Summerlin said. She got out and did the work herself. She was interested in growing things and making places beautiful. She was a slight woman in stature, but go a lot of things done. We don't have many people who give of their time like that, expecting nothing in return.
For a while she was unofficial grounds keeper at the Methodist Church in Pelham. She was involved in fundraisers for the March of Dimes on the local and national level and she was a member of the Thomasville Garden Club. She also initiated the recreation program for teens at "The Barracks" on Grady Street, Miss Summerlin said.
Born 17 Dec 1901, in Mitchell County, she was the daughter of the late John and Zenia Palmer Akridge. She was a homemaker and was a member of the Hand Memorial United Methodist Church.
Survivors include her husband, William R. "Billy" Ryan of Pelham; one daughter, Margaret Curles of Pelham; two sisters, Hettie Park of Thomasville and Inez Reeves of Pahokee, Fla; one granddaughter, Lise Brenner of Biloxi, Miss. and one great granddaughter, Logan Ryan Brenner. Active pall bearers were M. R. Stewart, Steve Brenner, Hulon Whigham, Marlin Wickline and Henry Lamar. Braswell Funeral Home of Pelham was in charge of arrangements.
