Ruby Bowen
Ruby Lee Caison Bowen, 82, died July 24, 2005, after declining health at Grace Ridge retirement Community in Morganton where she and her husband have resided since 1994.
Mrs. Bowen was born in Bolton on Dec. 13, 1922, to Joel Preston Caison and Nettie Carroll Casion Rogers. She is preceded in death by her parents and one brother Herbert Caison.
Surviving are her husband of 58 years, the Rev. William Franklin Bowen Jr.; daughter, Vicki Lynn Owens, and husband, Charlie, of Union Mills; three grandchildren, William "Billy Jack" Lovelace, Leslie Hudson and David Kyle Lovelace all of Rutherford County; five great grandchildren; one sister, Margaret Baker, of Holden Beach; three brothers, Wilbur Caison of Leland and Harris Caison of Monks Corner, S.C. and several nieces and nephews.
A Hallsboro High School Graduate, Ruby was employed at Atlantic Coast Line Railroad until she enlisted in the United States Navy serving as a dental technician. Upon honorable discharge from the Navy, she resumed her clerical position at Atlantic Coast Line Railroad. In 1947, she met and married William Franklin Bowen Jr., of Wilmington. Following their Aug. 30th wedding, she along with her husband attended Mars Hill Junior College, then Furman University, working toward her teaching degree. Illness interrupted her education and not until 1972 did she graduate from Gardner-Webb College, with her degree in elementary education, teaching in Rutherford County until her retirement in 1987.
Ruby was an accomplished seamstress and an avid, talented quilter, as well as Gardening, which earned her a "master gardener" certification from the North Carolina Extension Department in Rutherford County.
Ruby was a devoted and loving wife, mother and grandmother and her contributions to the loves of others were many. She was loved and cherished and will be missed by all who knew her.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today at Camp Creek Baptist Church, Union Mills, with the visitation being held one hour prior to the services.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Friendship fund of Grace Ridge Retirement Community or to the Camp Creek Baptist Church Cemetery fund.
