"My grandfather, Dilman Baker was the eldest of ten children who made up the family of David Baker and his wife, Cynthia Shattuck. Nearly all his life he suffered from asthama and a bronchial affection. This doubtless irritated a temperament which was naturally irascible and pessimistic. The Baker temperaments seemed to be divided between a love of fun and that more somber strain we called "The Baker Blues". Grandfather's words snarlled out like fire-crackers and his feet were always on the road to the poor-house.

"But he did have a sense of humor and fun. None of us stood in awe of him. If we cried with a hurt finger, he called us to his side, examined the finger carefully, made a little sputtery noise as if to spit on it, then said "Run put a little ashes on it."

"Dilman Baker was passionately fond of music. In spite of his broncial trouble, he could sing in a clear tenor voice the hymns and anthems he loved so well. All of my mother's brothers and sisters sang, except perhaps Aunt Sue. Grandfather loved to gather his girls and boys about him and sing from the old-fashioned "note-books" of that day.
