Dr. Leonard Hays, 93, of 18120 Barnesville Road, Barnesville, died Sunday, May 9 at home. Born in Barnesville he was a son of the late Leonard I. J. and Mary Eliza W. Hays.

Dr. Hays attended Montgomery County schools and the University of Maryland. After his graduation from the University of Maryland School of Medicine in 1913, he served internship at City Hospital, New York City, and residency at Guys Hospital, London, England. Dr. Hays was a ship's surgeon for the British Royal Navy at the beginning of World War I, and, when the United States entered the war, became a lieutenant in the Medical Corps for the U.S. Navy. He later established practice in Hyattsville, where he was one of the originators of the first free medical clinic.

Dr. Hays was a physician with the University of Maryland, and, in conjunction with his practice, served as a surgeon for the Baltimore and Ohio railroad. He continued in practice for 52 years until he retired and returned to the family home in Barnesville.

At the time of his death, Dr. Hays was the oldest living member of the Prince
George's Medical Society and the University of Maryland School of Medicine Alumni Association. He was an honorary life member.of the BPO Elks, Hagerstown Lodge 378.

Surviving are two nieces, Elizabeth Hays Tolbert and Mary White Hays Lok, both of Barnesville; seven great-nieces and great-nephews. Friends may call from 2-5 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, May 11 at the home, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 12. Interment will be in Monocacy Cemetery, Beallsville.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the scholarship fund of the University of Maryland School of Medicine, care of Executive Director Mrs. Jean Goral, Medical Alumni Association, University of Maryland, 522 W. Lombard St.,
Baltimore, Md. 21201.
