Civil Engineer. One of the foremost civil engineers of the mid-19th century, he was involved in projects ranging from the laying of miles of railroad tracks to many improvements and features of the New York City Harbor. He co-founded the American Society of Civil Engineers in 1852, and served as its president in 1867 to 1868.
