The Late Mrs. Elizabeth Ellis
To the Southwest Mail:
Although quite a lapse of time has passed, we crave a little of your space to chronicle the death of one of Vernon county’s oldest inhabitants.
Mrs. Elizabeth Ellis was born Oct. 16th, 1813, in Bourbon County, Ky., and died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Hunter, Jan. 22, 1897, being at the time of her death 83 years, 3 months and 6 days old.
She moved with her parents to Montgomery county, MO, in 1819; was married in 1833 to Wm J. Ellis, and with him moved to Vernon county, Mo., in 1844, at which time it formed a part of Bates county.
Six children resulted from this union, three of whom are now living in Vernon county-Mrs. J.M. Seybold, Mrs. S. E. Hunter and J. D. Ellis, who now represents Vernon county in the State legislature. Two died in infancy and William gave up his life for his country.
She leaves eleven grand children and twelve great grand children. She was a consistent member of the Primitive Baptist church for fifty years.
She lived an exemplary life. She was an affectionate wife, a loving and kind mother, a good neighbor.
The whole community mourns her loss. May the blessings of God rest upon those who still remain and mourn the loss of a mother.
Elder R. F. Peake
