The Rev. Anson Judd Upson
GLENS FALLS, N.Y., June 15.—The Rev. Anson Judd Upson, Chancellor of the University of the State of New York, and ex-President of Auburn Theological Seminary, died here to-day at the age of eighty-two. The funeral will be held in Utica. Dr. Upson was born in Philadelphia Nov. 7, 1823, being the son of Dana Judd Upson and Mary F. Clarke. He received his education at Hamilton College, being graduated from that institution in 1843. He received the degree of A.M. in 1846, D.D. in 1870, LL.D. from Union College in 1880, and L.H.D. from Colgate University in 1895. He studied law at Utica, N.Y., and taught rhetoric and moral philosophy in Hamilton College between the years 1845 and 1870. He was ordained a Presbyterian clergyman in 1868, and later became pastor of the Presbyterian Church in Albany. From 1870 to 1880 he taught sacred rhetoric in the Auburn Theological Seminary. Since then he had been connected with the University of the State of New York. He had been Chancellor of the University since 1892. He was the author of numerous literary and historical lectures, sermons, and addresses.
