William J. Byrnes was born at Postville, Green County, WI, eldest child of James and Martha (Oliver) Byrnes. Removed to Pleasant Township, Lincoln County, SD in 1880 where he taught school. Married first on Dec. 29, 1881 to Rosa Kundert. Two children, Ralph and Clarence, who died without issue. Married second, on 13 Oct 1888 to Helen Matts of Dane County, Wisconsin. Five children. Elected county treasurer of Lincoln County in 1894. Engaged in the undertaking business in Canton, SD and served as coroner.
