Alton Durwood Coffman, 82, passed away Sunday, March 21, 2010 at Hendrick Medical Center after having triple by-pass surgery. Memorial services will be held Tuesday, March 30th at 11:00 a.m. at Eastside Baptist Church in Ranger. Burial will follow at the Bullock Cemetery. Visitation will be held Monday, March 29th from 6 to 8:00 p.m. at Edwards Funeral Home.
Alton Coffman was born October 21, 1927 in Ranger to Robert Lee and Ester (Bailey) Coffman. He grew up on the farm north of Ranger and attended Bullock grade school. He served several months with the Merchant Marines before going into the Army Corp of Engineering. He was based in Okinawa where he operated heavy equipment to build Kedena Air Force Base. He returned to the farm north of Ranger, and took over the farm when his father retired in 1957. He was actively engaged in farming and ranching until he retired in 2009. He married Cleta Graham in May of 1954. They have two daughters, three grandchildren and one great grandson, a sister Bobbie McBay and husband Carl and one niece and one nephew.
Alton served on the Board of Directors District 10 of the Texas Sheep and Goat Raisers Assoc., on the Natural Resources Committee and Predatory Animal Committee for the State of Texas, as well as the Mohair Council of America. He was an active member of the Eastside Baptist Church of Ranger for more than 30 years and served as a deacon.
In 1993, Alton and Cleta were presented with a Family Land Heritage Certificate recognizing the Coffman Farm of Stephens Co., founded in 1892, for a century or more of continuous agricultural production. Rick Perry, Texas Agriculture Commissioner, at the time made the presentation during the Texas Dept. of Agriculture's 19th Family Land Heritage program held January 15, 1993 in Austin. Mr. and Mrs. Coffman were the fifth applicant from Stephens Co. to qualify for the honor.
