Muriel G. Torgerson, 89, of Springfield, formerly of Scottsdale, Ariz., Lakeland, Fla., and Adams, Minn., died at 1:43 p.m. Friday, March 26, 2010, at Lewis Memorial Christian Village.

She was born Aug. 27, 1920, in Dexter, Minn., the daughter of Henry A. and Inga Arntzen Sass. She married Vance N. Torgerson on April 14, 1946; he preceded her in death on Sept. 19, 2002.

She also was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Donald Sass; and an infant sister.

She is survived by three sons, Dr. Stuart (wife, Cressie) Torgerson of Springfield, Dr. Brian C. (wife, Candace) Torgerson of Vass, N.C. and James D. (wife, Mary Ann) Torgerson of Fountain Hills, Ariz.; seven grandchildren, Alissa (Ryan) Schuh, Andrew, Sara (Matt) Oborne, Erik, Lindsey, Cheryl Kosloske and Jayden; a great-grandson, Noah; sister-in-law,

Dorothy L. Smith of Glens Falls, N.Y.; a niece; and two nephews.

Muriel had lived in Springfield for the past three and a half years. She was a homemaker and also worked as a bank teller and at Dayton's Department Store.

She was a member of Little Cedar Lutheran Church in Adams Minnesota, where she was active with several groups and circles. She also was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and League of Women's Voters. Muriel was a great golfer and had three holes- in-one. She enjoyed playing bridge and reading.

Visitation will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, April 3, 2010, at Little Cedar Lutheran Church in Adams, Minn. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, April 3, 2010, at the church, with Pastor Leslie Neist officiating.

Burial will be at Little Cedar Cemetery in Adams, Minn.

Memorials may be made to St. John's Lutheran Church, Lewis Memorial Christian Village or Memorial Medical Center Foundation.

Muriel Sass was born on August 27, 1920, to Henry and Inga Sass. Wither her parents and brother, Donald, the family moved to Adams from Elkton in 1933. Muriel entered the seventh grade at the Adams Public School and also the Little Cedar Lutheran Weekday School. After graduation from high school in 1938, Muriel attended St. Olaf College and the University of Minnesota. Employment consisted of the Dayton Co. in the Minneapolis offices, and eventually the Farmers State Bank of Adams.

Muriel and Vance Torgerson were married in 1946 at Little Cedar church. They are the parents of three sons. Dr. Stuart and wife Crescence live in Springfield, Illinois, with their children Alissa and Andrew. Dr. Brian and wife Candace reside in Sanford, North Caroline, with children Sara, Erik, and Lindsey. James and Mary Ann reside in Scottsdale, Arizona. Their daughter, Cheryl and husband Schaun Kroll live in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

Muriel's favorite hymns are the compositions of Martin Luther such as "A Mighty Fortress is our God." Pastimes have been sewing, reading, and as much golfing as possible.
