John McCaw Smith

Dead: John M. Smith died at the residence of his son-in-law, B. F. Chamberlain, after an illness of several weeks. Deceased was an old and highly respected citizen, widely known throughout eastern TX before and since the War.

He was born in South Carolina in 1811 and moved thence to MS and therre married Miss Elizabeth Mosely in 1840. He left MS and came to TX in 1857 and engaged in the mercanttile and planting business. He became largely interested in these lines before and during the War and accumulated a large fortune which was swept by the fortunes of War.

He came to Houston County in 1875 and has resided here ever since. He leaves three daughters and one son. He has been a consistent church member since 1827, having at that time joined the Methodist Church.
