Art was married first to Wilma Aileen "Billie" Hamman on July 1, 1950 in Los Angeles, CA. Billie had been previously married, but her first husband was killed in World War II. She came into her marriage to Art with two children, Pinky and Pete. Art did not adopt them, but helped raise them in the junior high and senior high years, but didn't really bond with them. After a few years Art and Billie divorced. Not long after that Billie was in a bad car accident and left impaired for the rest of her life. Art and his second wife helped care for Billie. After Billie died Art had no more contact with Pinky and Pete.
Art married second Catherine Mary "Cathy" Zimmerman on Feb 27, 1971 at Indian Wells, CA. She survived him, and later remarried again.
Art and Cathy retired to Ord, NE.
Art was deliberate about never having any children. He said that so many of his brothers and his sister Doris were all so messed up that he thought the Carlsen gene-pool needed to come to an end, and so he had no children. He died of alcoholism and a ruined liver.
Art gave his body to science, to Creighton Dental College in Omaha. So his grave holds not body, but does bear a memorial marker, in the same lot as the grave of his father, Carl Alfred Carlsen, and the marker of his brother Paul Thomas Carlsen. Art was a B-24 Bomber pilot in World War II, flying many missions over Germany.
