Caswell C. York was the son of Enoch and Nancy (Hill) York. His first wife was Mary C. Lowry, and they had two sons: Adam York and John Enoch York. His second wife was Margaret "Elizabeth" Wallace, and they had five children: Nancy A. (York) Crane, Matilda Jane (York) Jennings, Mary Elizabeth (York) Behrens, and twins Henry Clay York and Daniel Webster York. Caswell was born in Tennessee and grew up in Alabama. He was a Union sympathizer, and had to be escorted out of the South under federal protection with his family. He fought for the Union during the Civil War, and eventually brought his family by covered wagon to the Northwest, where his son Adam had already settled. He farmed near Harrison, Idaho, where he is buried in an unmarked grave, near the marked grave of his second wife.
