Austin Mifflin Beittel was the 8th child of 10, (8 lived to adulthood), of Benjamin David Beittel and Lavinia Heller Ebersole Beittel. His parents died when he was quite young and he went to live with his older brother, Charles Rouss Beittel and his wife. He was a graduate of Columbia Central High School. His middle name came from a local prominent poet.
He married Mary Margaret Hollis Beittel in 1921 and they had one child, Richard Austin Beittel, Sr.

Austin M. Beittel began his career as a cost accountant in 1917 and worked for several firms before becoming a staff accountant with Elmer L Hatter firm in 1928. He joined the partnership in 1933.
Austin was a member of the First United Methodist Church, where he served as a trustee, chairman of the finance committee and treasurer of the rebuilding fund of the church,which burned in a fire in 1946.
Austin was a veteran of WWI and served with Army Air Force.
A former member of the Y.M.C.A. board of directors, he was a member of the Hamilton Club, the American and Pennsylvania Institutes of Certified Public Accountants and the National Association of Accountants.
He was also treasurer of the Golden Cross Society of the Cornwall Manor United Methodist Church Home. Austin and his wife resided at 1532 Hillcrest Ave, Lancaster, PA.
