John Almer Long was a Baptist preacher, and a county tax official in Decatur County. He preached at the New Hope Baptist Church, and records of the congregation mention him in the 1870's. According to stories passed down by the family, he got sick while riding in the rain to collect county taxes, and died as a result. Some time after his death, collected tax money was found in his saddlebags, and turned in to the county. Decatur County records do show that a Long family member came forward a few months after his death to turn in money that he had in his possession, which would seem to back up this story.

John and Louisa Jane moved to Texas in the early 1880's, living in the area of Weimar, near the Colorado/Fayette County line. Louisa Jane and their oldest son Abner both died there, and are buried in marked graves at the Clear Creek Cemetery near Weimar. John came back home to Decatur County with the children, and by fall of that year had remarried to Mahala Welch, the daughter of a friend and neighbor. When Mahala died a short time later, he married a third time, to her sister Eliza Medora "Donie."

Although he was a Baptist, John A. is buried at Campground Presbyterian Church, as it was the local cemetery in the nieghborhood where he lived. Several children who died very young are buried there with him. His grave marker was put up later by his daughters Neely May and Ethel Blank.
