William B Paul Had Lived in Fort Wayne Since 1846 – Was One of the Earliest Canal Boat Captains and Long a Prominent Contractor
William Paul, father of one of the best-known and most prominent families of Fort Wayne died Wednesday afternoon at 5:25 o'clock at the age of eighty-three. Death was hastened in a measure by paralysis with which he was stricken in the fall of 1872. Since then Mr Paul had not taken an active interest in business and had remained close to his home at the corner of West Jefferson and Harrison streets, where death occurred.
Mr Paul was born in Hanover, Germany, October 11, 1824 and came to America in the year 1846, locating in Fort Wayne the same year. He first engaged in canal boating and was prominent in canal traffic until 1858, when he embarked in the building contracting business.
For fourteen years Mr Paul was Fort Wayne's leading general contractor, and in the prime of his life, with the city of his choice growing steadily and much of its progress due to his own work, he was compelled to retire on account of a stroke of paralysis.
He was one of this city's oldest and best-known citizens and was widely known throughout the state, as his business had often taken him to other cities. In his days of greatest activity, he was successful.
Mr Paul was not known to many people of the present day, owing to the affliction that had confined him to privacy for more than a third of a century. To the old residents, however, he was well known because of the prominent part he took in the business and commercial interests of the city during its early days, and as he was known he was respected. He was a fine type of the magnificent citizenship that the fatherland has given to this country, sturdy in manner, conquering in spirit, undaunted by the obstacles the new country threw in his path. Devoted to religion and combining in his mental, physical and spiritual nature all those high qualities that characterized his time and compatriots. Mr Paul may well be classed among the real founders of Fort Wayne. He was one of the men of progress who have made the city great and its citizenship upright.
In the immediate family, the father's death was preceded by one son, William Paul Jr-about six years ago. He was manager of the Citizens' Trust company.
There are surviving the aged wife and eight children-Henry C Paul, the well known capitalist; Mrs Caroline Storm and Mrs J J Kern of this city; Mrs William Diederick of near Hoagland, Ind; Miss Elizabeth Paul, Charles Paul, manager of the Paul Manufacturing works; Mrs Fred Baade and Mrs Henry Lepper, all of this city, Mr John C Peters is a half-brother to the children.
