He was born in Union Township, Adams County, PA. He married Amanda Kellenberger on October 12, 1873. After farming in York County, PA they moved to Kansas about 1879. After a year in Kansas and crop failure, he sent his starving family by train to cousins in Indiana while he drove a wagon back to Indiana. They farmed in in Washington Township, Newton County, IN until 1909 when they moved to Brook, IN. He was a staunch Prohibitionist. They had eight children.
