Anna, or Yiri according to immigration records, was born in Suceava County, Romania, in the communal community of two villages named Pojorâta and Valea Putnei in the region known as Transylvania. Anna's death certificate states that she was born in Pojorata. Transylvania is a historical region in the central part of Romania, bounded on the east and south by the Carpathian mountain range; historical Transylvania extends in the west to the Apuseni Mountains.

Prior to 1920, and for 1,000 years prior, the area was in Hungary.

Anna entered America using the name Yira Ganea. It is not known why she used the name Anna in America or where, why, and how the name Anna originated.

Anna's parents were Moise (or Maurice) Ganea and Mary Cristea (or Anna Cristio). She had at least one brother or uncle that immigrated with her to America in 1910 who she named as her closest relative at that time; possibly, her parents were deceased. Her traveling brother or uncle's name was Gyorgy, age 43. György is a Hungarian version of the name George. The final destination in America for both was the home of Aesalon(sic) Popa in Alliance, Ohio.
