Son of Rane McKinney and second wife, Sabra Elizabeth Vardeman.

He married Elizabeth Hutcheson Payne on Oct. 12, 1821, in Wayne Co., KY.

Known children: Sabra Ann (Judge William H. Johnson), Rachel Wilson (Capt. Thomas Higgenbotham), George Franklin (Martha Ann McKinney), Reuben Charles (Margaret Brown), Martha Jan (William Norton), Asa Martin "Doc" (Susan Catherine Brown), and Tabitha Agnes (Procktor M. Burns).

He was the local Justice of the Peace during the Civil War, and was shot and killed close to his home by an unidentified man.

** From the remembrance of the Rev. Gideon Higginbotham (Published in "Bolivar Herald” newspaper in 9 parts in 1921-Covers his early life-1845 & on thru the Civil War) "[Note from Judy: James Rane McKinney was shot and left lay by a young man on a horse in Oct. 1863, while he was near the Halfway spring, in sight of his house. They never caught the killer, but assumed it was a Union man, as James was a southern supporter.]"

McKinney Cemetery was named for James Rane McKinney. His son, George Franklin McKinney, became the landowner.

James' grave marker has an open Bible with the words "Holy Bible" at the top. His footstone has "J. McK."

The "McKinney Cemetery" is now located on private property and access to it is at the discretion of the current landowner.
